The Biggest Mistake We Made While Traveling in Europe and How to Avoid It

When traveling internationally, it’s easy to assume that you’ll always have access to Wi-Fi. That you won’t need to worry about your phone data. We learned the hard way that this isn’t always true.

Maybe we were being a little naive or cheap. Whichever way you want to look at it. But we figured we could survive without our phones for those short bursts when we didn’t have WiFi.

During one of our trips in Europe, we drove from Bansko, Bulgaria, to Bucharest, Romania – a long, almost 10-hour journey. We rented a car, downloaded our directions in advance onto our phones, and went on an adventure through the Balkan countryside. One of those road trips you’ll never forget, in the best sort of way. Our drive to Romania seemed to go rather seamlessly except when we had to make a detour due to construction, but that was just a little blip that we figured out without issues. The rest of the roadtrip was beautiful and exciting to see places and things we never would have if we traveled by other means.

The real problem was what we didn’t know was happening because we couldn’t receive messages on our phones. We hadn’t known that our HomeExchange hosts had sent us a WhatsApp message asking about our arrival time. Without phone access, we missed it entirely. They had also sent us updated information about how to get into the building and further instructions that we didn’t think we needed when we left Bansko early in the morning.

When we finally reached the building, the code to enter the apartment didn’t work. We couldn’t reach our hosts because we didn’t have WiFi. We ended up getting into the building when someone had randomly opened the door to walk out. We took that opportunity to sneak in and get up to the apartment. By the time we got inside, they were still in the apartment because they didn’t know when we would arrive. So they were just packing up and about to leave. All of this honestly could have been avoided if we had stayed connected while traveling.

Thankfully, they were incredibly nice and gave us a rundown about the neighborhood. It was actually a fun mishap to be able to meet our hosts in person and get to know them before they jetted off so we felt comfortable being able to stay in their home and I’m sure it made them more comfortable as well to get to know us first.
