If you’re looking for a unique date night in Buffalo, NY, you’ll find it tucked away on a block filled with bars, brews, and gin joints: Hatchets & Hops, one of the first three axe-throwing bars in the United States. Since opening in 2016, they’ve built a reputation as a premier recreational sporting venue and one of Buffalo’s most memorable nightlife experiences.

When you walk in, you’re greeted by their friendly front-of-house staff who will check you in—or you can head straight to the bar. The bar itself feels like a cozy speakeasy, complete with a glowing LED sign listing their rotating seasonal beers (including a “mystery beer” if you’re brave enough to take the chance). They also offer ciders, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks.

While you wait for your axe-throwing competition to begin, you can order a drink or grab a snack from their limited menu. Think salty pretzels, sweet churros, and shareable pizzas—perfect fuel before stepping into the ring.
Your experience begins with a safety briefing and hands-on training from one of Hatchets & Hops’ knowledgeable and enthusiastic instructors. They make sure you’re comfortable and confident before the games begin.

From there, it’s game on. The first half of the competition features rotating doubles matches, where you’re paired with other players. Don’t be surprised if you end up making a new friend or two to keep the night going afterwards. For us, Shane was the star of the night—he crushed our group of 12 by more than 20 points for the double matches.
The second half of the night ramps up into elimination rounds. Shane made it to the final three, but was eventually knocked out. I wasn’t so lucky. After a promising start, switching boards completely threw me off my game (I swear that one was rigged against me!). The champion took home bragging rights, a free drink, and even a small trophy.

From start to finish, the competition lasted about two hours, but the energy made the time fly.
Beyond the Bar
Hatchets & Hops doesn’t just keep the fun within their four walls. Their Axe Wagon is a mobile setup that can bring axe throwing to your wedding, backyard party, company outing, or college event. If you’re looking to make an impression at your next event, axe throwing is guaranteed to be a hit.
For a date night, group hangout, or even a team-building event, Hatchets & Hops in Buffalo, NY delivers a one-of-a-kind experience. Between the speakeasy-style bar, competitive tournaments, and the chance to unleash your inner lumberjack, this is an unforgettable night out.
If you’re ready to try it for yourself, book a spot and get ready to throw down—literally.
